A Common Problem that We Don’t Like to Talk About

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a very common problem that most men do not like to talk about. ED can be equally devastating for a man and his partner. Treating ED can help a man regain his confidence, control, ability to enjoy activities, improve his quality of life and have a satisfying sex life. Erectile dysfunction occurs when blood flow to the penis is restricted. ED is caused by both physical and psychological factors. TriMix and QuadMix Therapy are two treatments that can help correct this problem.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

Causes of ED can be both physical and psychological. Physical causes may include:

  • Alcohol
  • Diabetes
  • Drug Abuse
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol which, causes clogged blood vessels
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Medications and Prostate cancer treatment
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Surgery

Psychological causes of ED may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress

The Process of Achieving an Erection

To achieve an erection, a person must first go through what’s known as an excitement phase. If a person has an emotional disorder, this affects their ability to become sexually excited. Depression and anxiety are associated with increased risk for ED. If a person had difficulty in achieving an erection in the past, he may fear he won’t in the future, this is called performance anxiety. Sometimes men can’t achieve an erection with a certain partner. Someone with ED related to performance anxiety may be able to have full erections when masturbating or when sleeping, yet he isn’t able to maintain an erection during intercourse.

Drug and/or Alcohol Abuse may also cause ED by affecting a man’s ability to achieve or maintain an erection.
ED Oral medications are not Always Effective

Non-surgical treatments such as the Priapus shot is a therapy that involves the injection of platelet-rich plasma into the penis. Other penile injection erectile dysfunction treatments consist of TriMix and QuadMix Therapy. These ED treatments are options when oral medications do not work for the patient.

Penile Injection Therapy

Penile Injection Therapy

The erectile tissue is the part of the penis that causes you to get an erection. This tissue is actually a muscle, and it needs to be stimulated like any other muscle in your body. So, like any muscle, if you go long periods of time without using it, it will weaken. And with erectile tissue, it is a similar case. Therefore, if you’re not regularly having sex, you may have difficulty getting or sustaining an erection. The saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it” applies here. But, don’t worry, there are options!

So, by getting erections you can increase blood flow, which helps strengthen the erectile muscles and keeps the erectile tissue healthy. In cases where oral medications don’t work, a penile injection may help you achieve the erection. For best results, a patient will inject the penis about 5 to 15 minutes before he wants an erection. Before use, Dr. David Suarez will review the instructions with the patient and that he is fully comfortable with injecting himself before he leaves the office.

Medications Used

The two most commonly used medications for injection therapy are TRIMIX and QUADMIX. Most men begin injection therapy with TriMix, which is a mixture of 3 ingredients: alprostadil, phentolamine, and papaverine.

QuadMix is a mixture of 4 ingredients: Papaverine, Phentolamine, Prostaglandin and Atropine. QuadMix is usually prescribed for patients for whom Trimix does not work sufficiently well.

Are there any Risks or Side Effects associated with TriMix and QuadMix?

TriMix and QuadMix are safe medications when used properly. Correct dosing and administration minimize the risk of any complications. There are some risks associated with injecting in the penis. These include risks of bleeding, infection, scar formation which can lead to penile curvature and Peyronie’s disease. The worst complication is the same complication seen with any of the pills used for erectile dysfunction called Priapism.

A Warning about Priapism

Priapism is an erection that lasts too long. Priapism can develop without sexual stimulation and doesn’t go away after orgasm. There is a low risk of having priapism after penile injection therapy. When you have a full erection, no fresh blood flows into your penis. This means that your penis isn’t getting oxygen, which can damage the tissue and lead to permanent ED. If this happens to you, it is a medical emergency and you need to seek immediate medical attention.
